POSITION TITLE: Pretrial Services Officer II
DEPARTMENT: Pretrial Services
POSITION REPORTING: Chief of Pretrial LAST UPDATE: 2020 SUMMARY: A Pretrial Officer II is an experienced officer, responsible for completing assessments and a criminal history on defendants in order to assist the judge in making bail decisions. This position will actively monitor higher risk defendants released on bail conditions to ensure the defendant appears for all court proceedings and does not engage in new criminal activity while in the community. In the absence of the supervisor, this officer will provide leadership and mentorship to the team. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will interact regularly with judges, prosecutors, public defenders, jail, local law enforcement, the private bar, and the public.
Will be responsible for researching criminal case histories, conducting pretrial risk assessments, preparing reports, meeting with defendants, making recommendations to judges regarding conditions of pretrial release for pretrial defendants, and staffing court during first appearance or subsequent hearings in which bail determination is made.
Will be required to monitor the conditions of pretrial release for pretrial defendants, assist pretrial defendants in attaining specific goals to ensure their appearance in court and the safety of the public during the defendant's pretrial release, and report the non-compliance with conditions of release to the court.
Will provide guidance to defendants with specific needs, including but not limited to social, emotional, and rehabilitative concerns.
Will make recommendations and/or referrals for social services, testing, treatment and/or counseling and will monitor treatment progress.
May be required to work a non-traditional work week which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and after hours on-call responsibilities.
Provide mentorship and leadership in the absence of supervisory staff. Additional duties will entail monitoring a caseload of high risk defendants and/or assisting staff in pretrial assessments.
Must complete a minimum of 40 hours of professional development training annually.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field and a minimum of three years of experience
Knowledge of department policy and procedures
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of mental health issues and treatment strategies
Knowledge of automated system
Knowledge of pretrial law
Public safety skills
Knowledge of treatment programs and government agencies
Knowledge of the criminal justice system
Management and leadership skills
