Job Summary
Whatcom County District Court is hiring one Court Clerk.
The Court Clerk serves as designated clerk for District Court proceedings involving misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor criminal cases and civil matters, for Small Claims Court, or for other matters within the District Court jurisdiction. Court Clerks work in courtrooms (including in the Jail) and in the office to accurately record and enter all records from a high volume of cases. This position also provides essential clerical support and customer service.
Job duties include:
Assists the judge during the selection of jurors by pulling names and recording names of those accepted and not accepted; monitors jurors" attendance for purposes of jury duty payment; ushers jurors into and out of court, takes orders for refreshments and fills orders, and serves as bailiff to prevent interference with jurors, as assigned.
Performs routine and at times complex office, clerical, and secretarial support in accordance with policies, procedures, laws, rules, regulations, confidentiality and other requirements.
Serves as in-court clerk for criminal proceedings, establishes and updates District Court criminal cases, issues warrants of arrest and/or bench warrants, sets up time pay agreements and traffic infractions, and routes traffic infraction notices to the Department of Licensing.
Establishes and updates District Court small claims, civil cases, and civil orders for protection from domestic violence and unlawful harassment, issues warrants of arrest and/or bench warrants, responds to inquiries regarding small claims, civil cases, and civil orders for protection from domestic violence and unlawful harassment.
Calls court to order, takes detailed minutes, marks exhibits, securely transfers exhibits to controlled-access vault, enters all information from assigned court cases into computer system and processes all associated paperwork.

This position is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) through 2024, subject to ongoing Council approval. Anticipated longer term employment opportunity may be available through attrition and future County Council funding decisions. Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
3 years of progressively responsible general office, clerical and/or secretarial experience.
Experience with court or legal procedures is strongly preferred.
Ability to type accurately at 55 net words per minute
Master Collective Bargaining Agreement Range 108.0
Full salary range: $17.97$27.25 per hour
This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range.
